Ricoh Imaging just launched their most powerful ultra-zoom yet. The new Pentax XG-1 boasts a 52X ultra-wide-angle optical zoom lens equivalent to 24-1248mm. It features a 16 megapixels high-speed CMOS sensor and Sensor-Shift image-stabilization. Its fast continuous drive runs at 10 FPS in full-resolution and up to 60 FPS at lower-resolution with a very respectable 30 FPS 4 megapixels mode.
The XG-1 is a prosumer bridge camera which offers full manual-controls, except for manual focus, and a shutter-speed from 1/2000s to 30s. Its 1/2.3″ CMOS sensor has an ISO 100 to 3200 sensitivity range. With a maximum F/2.8 aperture at wide-angle and F/5.6 at its extreme telephoto end, this ultra-zoom should prove to be highly versatile.
Ricoh equipped the XG-1 with full 1080p HD video capability using an efficient H.264 codec wrapped in Quicktime format. Framing with this digital camera is doable using a large 3″ LCD with 460K pixels or a built-in EVF with 200K pixels.
The Ricoh Pentax XG-1 is expected to be available next month for a suggested price of $399 USD or $429 CDN.
