Canon EOS 7D Full-Review Published

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

A detailed review of the Canon EOS 7D was recently published on Neocamera. This new DSLR marks the first new series of Canon SLRs since the Digital Rebel series. This time, the 7D extends the line up at the high end of 1.6X crop DSLRs. It has an impressive specifications list and a number of Canon firsts.

The Canon EOS 7D features an 18 megapixels sensor with wide ISO range from 100 to 12,800 as well as 8 FPS continuous drive and full 1080p HD video-recording mode. This is also the first non 1D/1Ds series to feature a 100% coverage viewfinder and at 1X magnification no less. The final headline touches are a built-in 2-axis digital level and weather-sealed body.

Movie mode on the 7D is very sophisticated allowing frame rates of 30, 25 or 24 Hz at 1920×1080 (1080p) and 60 or 50 Hz at 1280×720 (720p). Movie mode is completely independent from exposure modes, therefore it is possible to record video in P, A, S or M mode. It features a built mono microphone and a stereo mini-jack for using an external microphone.

The Canon EOS 7D is immediately available from retailers like Amazon and BH Photo.

New Canon EOS 1D Mark IV Also Reaches ISO 102,400

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Canon Canada just launched the EOS 1D Mark IV, a new top-of-the-line 1.3X crop sensor DSLR. This one features a 16 megapixels sensor capable of shooting continuously at 10 FPS. This mid-sized sensor has a standard ISO range of 100-12800 and 3 expanded ultra-high-ISO settings reaching a maximum of ISO 102,400.

Based upon the 1D Mark III, this new DSLR also has an integrated vertical grip and a weather-sealed body. According to Canon, the Mark IV has the highest degree of weather resistance in the EOS line. This is a professional grade camera with study build and advanced features and customization.

Headline improvements include a new autofocus system and movie-recording mode. There are now 45 autofocus points with 39 of them being cross-type. The new system delivers the speed necessary to track moving subjects and shoot at 10 FPS. The Canon 1D Mark IV also records movie at 1080p, the highest HD resolution available. At records 1080p at 30 FPS and even records 720p at up to 60 FPS.

This is an incredibly ambitious DSLR. Achieving ISO 102,400 is difficult in itself but Canon is doing it with 25% more resolution on a smaller sensor than Nikon’s just announced D3S. It is going to be very interesting to see the performance of these two camera.

The Canon EOS 1D Mark IV will be available later this year for $5499 CDN.

New Nikon D3S Tops ISO 100,000

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

In an amazing feat of engineering, Nikon topped their already class-leading low-light DSLR champion, the D3, by expanding the ISO range by 2 full stops on the new Nikon D3S. This upgraded version of their flagship full-frame DSLR includes its predecessor’s features, including:

  • 12 megapixels full-frame (FX) sensor
  • 9 FPS continuous drive
  • 51-point autofocus sensor
  • 1/8000-30s shutter-speed range
  • Exposure bracketing up to 9 frames
  • Large 100% coverage viewfinder
  • On-demand grid-lines
  • 3″ LCD with 920k pixels
  • Electronic virtual horizon
  • Dual Compact Flash card slots
  • Weather-sealed body with built-in vertical grip
The D3S adds an amazing ISO sensitivity range of 100-102,400, HD 720p (1280 × 720 @ 24 fps) movie-recording, improved contrast detect autofocus (for use in LiveView and movie-recording) and in-camera RAW development. When the D3 came out, it revolutionized low-light photography by allowing shots which were never possible before, providing clean ISO 6400 results and reaching ISO 25,600 when needed. Now, the Nikon D3S pushes this even more, allowing ISO 51,200 and 102,400 as well.
The design of the D3S, which is extremely similar to the D3, consists of a ruggedized body with both vertical and horizontal hand-grips and dual-everything: dual control-wheels, dual shutter-releases and dual memory card slots. Most buttons other than drive-mode are modeless on the D3S, allowing to change the behavior of the camera using custom settings. The D3S also features unprecedented stamina with 4200 shots-per-charge battery-life and at least 300,000 shutter-actuations.
The Nikon D3S is scheduled for availability in late November 2009. You can already pre-order the Nikon D3S from Amazon at a price of $5,199 USD. The Canadian price will be announced at a later time.
